CANADA SUMMER 2019

The forgotten story of
Mozart’s genius sister

The Other Mozart is the true, forgotten story of Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart, the sister of Amadeus – a prodigy, virtuoso and composer who performed throughout Europe with her brother, to equal acclaim – but her work and her story faded away, lost to history. The play is based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family’s humorous and heartbreaking letters.

The Other Mozart was featured in ELLE Magazine Italia! Elle.it

"Sylvia Milo has decided to tell the lost story of Nannerl in a play entitled "The Other Mozart" which debuted in 2014. It is a tribute to a great overlooked artist, but it is also a precious tribute to all the women that history forgot. The idea that - especially in certain fields - mostly men excel is still quite widespread. It is often thought that the best known and loved artists are mainly men because women are simply "less good". The rediscovered story of Nannerl instead hides another truth, made up of ignored, hindered, forgotten female talents. We will never know what it meant for Maria Anna to give up her passion, but above all we will never have her music. The lack of freedom enjoyed by the women of the time precluded the possibility of appreciating the works of an artist who - according to the premise - could have added an immense contribution to the history of music. The trouble with sexism is precisely this (and it is true then as today): in the long run we all end up losing."
